What is An Affiliate Site?
An affiliate site is in some ways much like a retail store: most of the products offered for sale are not made by the retailer, but rather, the manufacturer of the product depends on the retailer to market and sell its product.
The main difference is that an affiliate site carries little or no physical inventory.
There is a cost involved in warehousing the product, then shipping the product to a wholeseller, then shipping the product to a retailer, then storing the product on the retail level - usually at premium rates - until the item is sold.
That is something worth considering the next time you walk into a retail store and take into consideration what they are spending each month in retail space, manpower and utilities, as well as losses to shoplifting.
The overwhelming majority of affiliate sources are warehouse-level outlets that simply rely on affiliate marketers to get their products to the consumer without the manufaturer having to incur marketing expenses.
This way, the success of the affiliate depends on their time and effort, as opposed to the lethargic reactiveness of a top-heavy corporation's marketing strategy.
It is simply more cost-effective, for example, to sell wedding dresses online through affiliates such as us, than it is to spend millions of dollars on an ad campaign for a product that is not consumed on a weekly basis.
Do Affiliate Site Products Cost More Than Retail Site Products?
No. In fact, affiliate sites reduce the overhead involved it the process, in several ways.
First, if a site were to carry the product as physical inventory, there would have to be a mark-up involved in every transaction made in order for the process to be worth the site producer's time, effort and expenses.
The price of an item bought through a reseller/retailer (including online dropshippers) would have to be more than the price they purchased the item for in order for them to make a profit.
In contrast, an affiliate site is paid a commission that the customer would otherwise pay directly to the host whom the affiliate advertises for. The price for the product is the same, regardless of whether an affiliate is involved or not.
For example, if a manufacturer makes a product that they sell to a retailer or dropshipper for $100, a marketing commission is factored into that $100 for promoting the item, regardless of whether or not an affiliate is involved in the sale of that product to the consumer.
In contrast, a drop-shipper or reseller/retailer (such as a grocery store) has to turn a profit on the exchange - usually between 20-40% - sometimes much more, which would thus turn an item that a manufacturer sells for $100, into an item that a drop-shipper or retailer/reseller would have to sell for $120-140 just to cover their own expenses. Further, 99.9% of the resellers/retailers and dropshippers of specialty items simply do not have the buying power or handling capabilities to turn a volume sufficient to make their prices competitive with affiliate merchants. Affiliate merchants depend on volume, whereas retailers/resellers and dropshippers have to rely on charging more per item to make up for their inability to turn a decent amount of inventory.
Next, an affiliate has the ability to bring the customer items that a retailer/reseller or dropshipper would not risk stocking for fear of not being able to sell such items, such as products from small manufacturers. In this way, an affiliate can bring many, many more items into the reach of the populace, that a dropshipper or traditional reseller/retailer can not.
Lastly, a retailer/reseller needs to have retail space in order to store and possibly showcase the product in. In contrast, affiliate merchants need not have thousands of square feet of storage and retail space in order to bring the consumer thousands of items. This benefits the consumer because the affiliate can bring a much larger selection of inventory options to the consumer without the consumer having to pay for costs incurred as retail overhead.
